Heavy Rigid Non-Synchromesh Course

(For rigid vehicles with 3 or more axles, and with a GVM of greater than 8 tonnes; including the capacity to tow a single trailer to a maximum of 9 tonnes GVM; these vehicles will also have road ranger or crash gearbox)

Looking for a licence to drive an excavation or mining vehicle, local freight distribution trucks, a fire truck, passenger coach, or a garbage or garden centre truck with a road ranger or crash gearbox?

Armstrong’s heavy rigid – non-synchromesh licence course has been custom designed to develop those vital driving skills and knowledge necessary to successfully gain your heavy rigid – non-synchromesh licence to drive any of the above vehicles.

The innovative and powerful training course is conducted over three days for approximately 8½ hours per day with a maximum client/trainer ratio of 3:1 delivered by highly qualified nationally accredited trainers in a motivational and educational environment.

What you will need to be eligible to do the course -

  • A current Victorian Driver’s Licence; held for a minimum of 24 months; a secondary form of ID is also required; please refer to Armstrong’s Terms & Conditions for details.
  • Be highly competent in the operation of a manual vehicle.
  • Obtain a Victorian Bus and Truck Driver’s Handbook and study before the course; this can be purchased from Armstrong’s Office or downloaded via the VicRoads link or website.
  • Wear appropriate clothing, including fully enclosed shoes or runners.

What you will learn throughout the course -

  • Vehicle familiarisation and inspection prior to operation;
  • Critical skills in vehicle control, gear changing and manoeuvring, including cornering techniques and kerbside stops;
  • Techniques on changing a non-synchromesh gear box, up gear & down gear; on various inclines;
  • Safe driving techniques on hazard identification and approach;
  • Advanced observation skills and mirror use to enhance vehicle safety;
  • General road craft application including speed and lane selection to improve safety levels;
  • Extensive reference and relevance of theory to heavy rigid operation;
  • Critical reversing skills;
  • Practical application of ‘test exercises’ to help enhance the on-road assessment;

All training is conducted prior to any testing, maximising the training benefits to aid in the successful completion of the licence course.

Armstrong’s VicRoads accreditation means at the successful completion of the licence testing you will receive a Certificate of Competence* enabling VicRoads to issue your Heavy Rigid – Non-Synchromesh Licence so you can start your Transport Career!
